Style That Breathes: Dressing for Real Summer Heat

There comes a point every summer when getting dressed becomes less about creating the perfect outfit and more about one very important question: What can I wear that will not stick to me?

We are officially there.

When opening the front door feels a little like opening an oven, it can be tempting to give up on style altogether. But dressing for extreme heat does not have to mean sacrificing feeling put together. It just requires a slightly different strategy.

For me, that usually means reaching for a sleeveless dress or skirt. I love the ease of one-piece dressing, especially when the temperature is working against me. A lightweight dress requires very little thought, but with the right accessories, it can still look completely intentional.

And if shorts are not your favorite thing to wear, you do not have to force them. A longer, lightweight skirt can provide coverage while still allowing movement and airflow. The goal is not to show more skin simply because it is hot. The goal is to choose pieces that give your body room to breathe.

Which brings me to fit.

Hot weather is not the time for clothing that is pulling, squeezing, or clinging for dear life. Clothing that gently skims the body is often more comfortable and more flattering than something overly tight. There is a difference between fitted and fighting for its life. Your clothes should not be fighting for their life.

Fabric matters too. Linen, lightweight cotton, poplin, gauze, chambray, and seersucker are wonderful summer options. And yes, linen wrinkles. I steam mine before I leave the house, and then accept that five minutes later, it will look like I didn’t. Linen is going to do what linen does. There is a certain freedom in that.

When it is too hot for layers, accessories can do more of the work. A great pair of earrings, an interesting shoe, a beautiful bag, or one of my personal favorites, a hat, can make a simple outfit feel finished. Full disclosure: sometimes the hat is a style choice. Sometimes I simply did not want to do my hair. Both can be true.

And then there is the summer outfit reality check. The outfit that looked perfectly lovely standing still in front of the mirror can become an entirely different situation after ten minutes in a hot car. My advice? Sit down, move around, and give the outfit a proper test run before leaving the house. Summer has a way of revealing wardrobe decisions we probably should have reconsidered in the air conditioning.

Of course, summer dressing has its own cruel little joke. It may be 97 degrees outside, but the minute you walk into a restaurant, you are seated directly beneath an air-conditioning vent set to Arctic expedition. I almost always bring something with me, often a jean jacket, because apparently I like to prepare for two completely different climates in one outing.

Summer style does not have to be complicated. Choose breathable fabrics, give your clothes and your body a little room, and let a few thoughtful details finish the look.

And if the linen wrinkles or the hat is covering a questionable hair day?

Consider it part of the summer charm.
