From Awkward Beginner Wigs to Confidence: My Hair Thinning Journey

When Hair Thinning Becomes Personal

I knew my hair was thin when someone asked me if I was going bald. Rude and hurtful — but when it comes from a child, it’s brutally honest. I knew then that I had to do something different.

Hair thinning is something many women face, and it’s completely normal — whether due to genetics, medical conditions, or just age. For me, it started in my twenties because of a combination of PCOS, an autoimmune condition, and genetics. It affected my confidence, and I began feeling embarrassed because I could see my scalp no matter how I parted or styled my hair. I tried powders, special shampoos, and even Rogaine, but ultimately, I had to accept that my hair thinning was part of my genetic makeup.

Learning (and Laughing) Along the Way

Some of the first wigs I bought — I now look back and laugh about! They were way too dark, thick, and just not me. Thank you to my friends who supported me back then; I know you all lied about how those beginner wigs looked on me — haha! Back then, I didn’t have the resources we have now to explore the internet for guidance and support.

“Most women don’t even know I wear a wig — and they’re always shocked when I tell them.”

As time went on, I discovered so many stories of powerful women at every age navigating hair thinning, and it gave me hope. Today, I see many women my age seeking solutions for their thinning hair. The before-and-afters are incredible, and it’s inspiring to see how wigs and toppers can restore confidence and help women feel like themselves again.

Being Open About Wearing Wigs

Most women don’t even know I wear a wig. When someone compliments my hairstyle or color, I honestly tell them it’s a wig, and they’re always surprised, saying they never would have known. Of course, some eagle-eyed women spot it right away and ask me about it, and I’m always open and honest.

I never mind talking about wearing wigs or sharing where I got them. I believe in women helping women, so it never bothers me at all.

For Women Navigating Hair Thinning in Midlife

For middle-aged women experiencing hair thinning, know this: it’s completely normal, and you’re not alone. Hair changes as we age, and embracing solutions can help you feel confident and empowered, rather than embarrassed or restricted by your hair.

Cost, Maintenance, and What to Expect

Cost can range from $100 to thousands. There is a solution at almost any price point. Human hair is where the price point starts to skyrocket. I personally only wear synthetic wigs.

The maintenance on human hair wigs can be not only daunting but also very expensive. Synthetic wigs can be maintained with synthetic wig shampoo, conditioner, smoothing sprays, and general upkeep.

Wigs don’t last forever. You will have to purchase a new topper or wig every four to six months. How well you care for your wig — and the quality — will determine how long it lasts. I look at it this way: it’s around the same cost as getting my hair cut, colored, and highlighted at a salon.

Customizing Your Wig or Topper

Don’t hesitate to bring your wig or topper to your hairdresser for a trim or style. If they aren’t comfortable with it, ask for a referral. Many women have their wigs professionally customized to match their natural hair or desired look. Making your wig feel like you is completely reasonable.

I know that long wigs are not for me — you won’t see those inspirations here. I’ve found that they don’t suit me, but that doesn’t mean they won’t suit you!
