Hormones & Energy: Why You’re Still Tired (and What to Do About It)
Hi, I’m Jordan Kimler, Nurse Practitioner at PremierU for almost 6 years. I’ve been in the medical field for over two decades, specializing in Primary Care, Hormone Optimization, and Weight Management.
As a busy working mom of two, I found myself stuck in the cycle of taking care of everyone else while putting my own health on the back burner. After losing over 50 pounds four years ago, everything changed not just physically, but in how I understand health, especially for women.
Working in this space and going through my own journey has given me a completely different perspective. I’ve seen firsthand, both personally and through my patients, that the symptoms we often dismiss as “just stress” or “just getting older” are often our hormones signaling that something deeper needs attention.
How Hormones Affect More Than Just Energy
When we talk about hormones, most people think about energy feeling tired, needing more caffeine, hitting that afternoon crash.
But what’s often missed is how deeply hormones affect a woman’s confidence, her mood, and even her sense of identity.
Women will say things like:
“I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
“I’m more irritable than I used to be.”
“My motivation is gone.”
“I used to be on top of everything and now I feel overwhelmed.”
That’s not just a mindset issue. That’s physiology.
Hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol all play a role in brain function, emotional regulation, resilience to stress, and even how confident and capable we feel day to day.
So when those start to shift as they naturally do in midlife it’s not just about being tired. It can feel like you’re losing parts of yourself.
When to Stop Trying to ‘Fix It Yourself’
A lot of women try to push through. They clean up their diet, exercise more, take supplements, sleep when they can and when that doesn’t work, they assume it’s just something they have to live with.
But there’s a point where it makes sense to stop guessing and actually look at what’s going on.
If your symptoms are:
Persisting for months despite doing the “right things”
Progressively getting worse
Starting to impact your relationships, your work, or how you show up as a parent or partner
Some of the biggest red flags I see are:
Feeling exhausted but wired at night
Mood swings, irritability, or increased anxiety
Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
Loss of motivation or confidence
Changes in sleep patterns
Unexplained weight changes, especially around the midsection
Low libido or feeling disconnected from yourself
Those are not things you should just have to “push through.”
The biggest shift I’ve seen both personally and in my patients is that once you understand what’s actually happening in your body, everything changes. You stop blaming yourself. You stop guessing. And you can finally start addressing the root cause instead of just managing symptoms.
And that’s when women start to feel like themselves again not just with more energy, but with more clarity, confidence, and control.
Start small.
Stay consistent.
Focus on patterns, not perfection.
And if you’re ready to actually figure out what’s going on underneath it all, we can help.
