True North Boutique & Med Spa: Where History, Beauty, and Community Come Together A Grand Opening That Celebrated More Than a Business

Walking into True North Boutique & Med Spa is an experience in itself. Located in a beautiful historic landmark in Wood River, the space preserves the character and charm of its history while bringing in a welcoming, unique, and luxurious feel. From the moment you walk through the doors, the lighting, atmosphere, and even the scent in the air create the feeling of stepping into a high-end med spa. It feels elegant yet inviting, beautiful yet comfortable. You immediately feel welcome.

And on opening day, it was clear that people were excited to be there.

During the grand opening and ribbon-cutting, hundreds of people filled the approximately 3,000-square-foot space. Despite the crowd, something stood out to me: people weren’t simply waiting in lines or standing around. They were talking, making introductions, reconnecting with friends, and building relationships. As the afternoon continued and guests moved between the spa and the visiting vendors, the space became less crowded, allowing people even more time to explore and connect.

The energy was exciting, but the experience was about much more than the beautiful surroundings.

Throughout the spa, guests had opportunities to learn, ask questions, and experience services offered by local professionals. Two aestheticians were answering questions about skincare lotions and creams, helping guests understand what might work best for their skin. Emiley, with Skin by Emiley, was talking with attendees about skincare and finding the right products for their individual needs.

Brittani, with Color Bomb Creatrix, brought creativity and fun to the event by creating a Halloween-inspired look for a guest. Watching her work was fascinating, especially as she incorporated cotton into the makeup to create a unique, textured effect for the guest’s Halloween costume. It was a fun example of the creativity and talent local business owners bring to our community.

Alison Tindall, with Thriving Willow Whole Body Health, was also there, providing exams, helping guests learn about her services, and sharing her grand-opening membership special.

Everywhere you looked, someone was sharing knowledge, answering questions, showcasing a service, or connecting with another person. The event created a wonderful opportunity for guests to experience not only True North but also the talents of other local businesses.

The Heart Behind True North

While the space itself is beautiful, what stood out to me most was Mandie, the owner.

Mandie is a connector. She has a way of meeting people where they are, making them feel comfortable, and welcoming them as though they belong there. As I watched her move through the crowd, greeting guests, listening to people, and making connections, I couldn’t help but think about how much energy it takes to host an opening of this size.

There had to be moments when the excitement and responsibility felt overwhelming. Yet, from what I witnessed, Mandie appeared calm, welcoming, and at peace. She made time for people, and that matters.

She wasn’t simply hosting an event to celebrate the opening of her business. She was creating an experience where people could feel welcome, connect with others, and celebrate together.

That approach reflects who Mandie is beyond the doors of True North.

A Community That Showed Up for Her

Mandie is actively involved in several women-focused business and empowerment organizations, including - Riverbend Chapter Leader of Women Empowering Women, Madison County Little Black Book, and Extreme Business Builders.

These connections were evident on opening day. Business owners from across the area came out to support her, celebrate her accomplishment, and help make the event successful.

As I walked through the boutique, I stopped to talk with one customer and asked her a simple question: “How do you know Mandie?”

Her answer was another example of the connections that make this community so special. Jennifer Meshey, owner and operator of RiverView Tax Services in Troy, shared that she and Mandie had become close friends through Madison County Little Black Book, a women’s networking group.

Jennifer was there to support Mandie on such an important day, celebrating the realization of her dream while also taking the opportunity to shop for some trendy new clothing from the boutique.

I loved this moment because it captured so much of what the day was about. Jennifer wasn’t just a customer shopping at a new boutique. She was a friend showing up for someone she cared about, celebrating her success, and supporting another local business at the same time.

It was a small conversation, but it reflected a much bigger message: the relationships built through women’s networking groups can grow into genuine friendships that extend far beyond business meetings. They become connections where women encourage one another, celebrate milestones, and show up when it matters most.

And on Mandie’s big day, Jennifer was one of the many women who did exactly that.

But the support for Mandie extended far beyond the guests who walked through the doors on opening day.

Behind the scenes, she was surrounded by friends and family who worked day and night over the last several days to help bring her vision to life. Among those lending their time, energy, and support were Janelle and Sabrina, just a couple of the people who stepped up to help make this milestone possible.

Their dedication is another reminder that while starting a business may begin with one person’s dream, bringing that dream to life often takes an entire circle of people who believe in it, too.

Sabrina will also be joining the True North team as a nurse injector, making her part of the professional services that will help shape the business moving forward. It is especially meaningful to see the people who have supported Mandie behind the scenes also become part of the future she is building.

From the long hours of preparation to the excitement of opening day, their efforts reflect the love, friendship, and shared belief that helped turn True North from a dream into a reality.

And there is a reason so many people were willing to show up for Mandie.

Mandie is a cheerleader for other people. She celebrates their accomplishments, supports their businesses, and encourages the people around her to keep growing. When someone consistently shows up for others, those relationships become something meaningful. People remember who supported them, who encouraged them, and who helped them feel seen.

On this day, that support came back to Mandie in a big way.

What I witnessed was a room full of people who weren’t just there to see a new business open. They were there to celebrate a woman who has made a difference in their own business journeys and in the broader community.

More Than a Boutique: A Place to Belong

While True North Boutique & Med Spa is a beautiful addition to the local business community, bringing together a historic setting, a luxurious atmosphere, and professional services, its purpose reaches far beyond beauty and wellness.

When asked what it meant to see so many people show up to support her dream, Mandie’s answer was filled with gratitude and emotion.

“It’s honestly overwhelming in the most beautiful way. I’ve poured everything I have into this dream, and there were plenty of moments I wondered if I was completely crazy for doing it. Seeing this community show up the way they have means more than I could ever put into words.”

She credits her incredible friends and the people of Wood River for helping make her dream a reality. For Mandie, the support represents something bigger than a successful business opening. It reflects the kind of community she is proud to be part of—a community that genuinely wants to see one another succeed.

And that same spirit is at the heart of what she hopes to create inside True North.

When asked what she wants people to feel when they walk through her doors, her answer reveals the personal experiences that helped shape her vision.

“More than anything, I want them to feel like they belong. I spent so much of my life walking into boutiques where I couldn’t shop because of my size, and I never want another woman to feel that way here.”

That statement says so much about the heart behind True North.

Mandie wants it to be a place where women feel welcome, regardless of what brings them through the door. Whether they are shopping for a new outfit, receiving a treatment, or simply looking for a little encouragement, she hopes they leave feeling seen, valued, and more confident.

“Because confidence isn’t about looking a certain way. It’s about feeling good being exactly who you are.”

Mandie wants women to understand that they have permission to be themselves, exactly as they are right now. They don’t have to wait until they reach a certain size, change their appearance, or become some perfected version of themselves to feel worthy of love and confidence.

Her hope is that women learn to embrace who they are in the present moment, recognize their own beauty, and give themselves the same grace and encouragement they so freely offer others. True North is meant to be a reminder that confidence doesn’t come from chasing an ideal image. It comes from accepting yourself, loving yourself, and knowing that you are enough just as you are.

In a world that constantly tells women how they should look, Mandie wants True North to be a place where they can let go of those expectations, feel comfortable in their own skin, and celebrate the woman they are today—not just the woman they think they need to become.

Perhaps that is what makes True North about so much more than clothing or services. It is about creating a space where women can feel comfortable being themselves, celebrate who they are, and walk out the door with a little more confidence than they had when they walked in.

When a Dream Becomes a Community

The grand opening of True North Boutique & Med Spa was a celebration of a new business, but it was also a reminder of what can happen when people invest in one another.

Mandie has created a place where people can come for beauty, wellness, and shopping, but opening day showed that she has also created something special around it: connection.

From the local professionals sharing their expertise to the friends and family who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, the business owners who came to support her, and friends like Jennifer who showed up to celebrate her milestone, the event demonstrated the power of a community that chooses to show up for one another.

And perhaps that is what made the grand opening so memorable. In a room filled with hundreds of people, there was a shared sense of excitement, support, and genuine celebration.

True North opened its doors, and the community showed up—not just because it was a beautiful new boutique and med spa, but because they wanted to show up for Mandie.

Her words about belonging seem to bring the entire story full circle. She knows what it feels like to walk into a store and feel that there isn’t a place for you. Now, she is building a business around the idea that every woman deserves to feel welcome.

That is a powerful vision, and one that extends beyond the walls of a business.

A successful business is about more than the space you create or the services you offer. It is also about the relationships you build, the people you encourage, and the community you help strengthen.

Mandie has turned her dream into an invitation: come as you are, find something that makes you feel good, and know that you belong.

And if the grand opening was any indication, the community is ready to be part of that journey.
